About Personal Recollections Of Joan Of Arc - Volume 2 by Mark Twain

Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, by the Sieur Louis de Conte is an 1896 novel by Mark Twain that recounts the life of Joan of Arc. It is Twain's last completed novel, published when he was 61 years old. The novel is presented as a translation (by "Jean Francois Alden") of memoirs by Louis de Conte, a fictionalized version of Joan of Arc's page, Louis de Contes. The novel is divided into 3 sections according to Joan of Arc's development a youth in Domrémy, a commander of the army of Charles VII of France, and a defendant at trial in Rouen. Originally, the novel was published as a serialization in Harper's Magazine beginning in April 1895. Twain, aware of his reputation as a comic, asked that each installment appear anonymously so that readers will treat the piece seriously. Regardless, his authorship soon became known, and the book edition published by Harper and Brothers in May 1896 credited Mark Twain.

I ordered both the volume I and II of "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc" by Mark Twain through my Amazon Prime account. They were both atrociously edited with many typographical errors. Was there no one to read it before it was printed and bound for sale?

The first volume was especially difficult to read since it was in courier font and had page breaks that were non-sensical. This was ironic since the volume cover said "High Quality Paperback" and it was, to say the least, not. (Filiquarian Publishing LLC/Qontro).

The second volume, although it was a smaller, hardback edition, also had too many typos to count (one every second page or so). Which made for a very distracted reader. (Bibliobazaar, LLC)

ALSO - if there are two volumes in a series like this - it would be helpful for Amazon to list that BOTH are required (that is, if you order volume 1 - that there is one more - volume 2 - required to complete the series. Maybe listing them together on your website? Or somehow connecting them on your website when searching for this title.

Thanks for letting me vent my frustration. It was a required reading for a book club - otherwise I would have chucked them in the trash early on in the reading!

Personal Recollections Of Joan Of ArcVolume 2 By Mark Twain Illustrated Mark Twain 9781533632654 Books Reviews

It was very interesting - I was previously unfamiliar with much of this information but somehow it manages to be drier and less interesting. Still worth reading though
As for as this reader is concerned the two volumes of the "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc" are the best examples of Mr. Twain's talent with the English language!
The second volume of Twain's Joan of Arc. Told from the perspective of a childhood friend and personal aide to Joan, the history is accurate. Twain called this his greatest work.
M Twain is very different in this book. He really adopts the simple language of the narrator and his admiration of Joan. It does make you feel like a witness of the events of the life of this incredible woman (or rather a child).
Mark Twain has out done himself in this work. The true story of Joan of Arc is told from the point of view of a close friend. You are with her throughout her whole life, from her humble beginnings, her miraculous entry into French politics and rise to leadership of the army to her capture, trial and martyrdom. It is amazing how much she was able to achieve in such a short time. How she was abandoned and betrayed by the King she saved and raised to the throne is very poignantly presented to the reader. Well worth reading.
when sam clemens was a young man in hanibal , mo. one windy day walking down a steet on his way home a piece of paper blew in face he started to throw it away but before he could he noticed in large print (jeane de arc)
he read the opening page of the book and thus became caught up in the story and started a life long study of the savior of france.
it was in later years after his 65th birthday that writing the book took on reality.
his oldest daughter susie had just died and he was thinking of her as he recalled the maid's personality.
some say the whole book is a tribute to her.

but in writing the history in the 3rd person as joan's page the real joan of arc appears.
i personally think it one of his best books and it took an enormous amount of research.
I love true and inspirational books and movies. Some fiction is inspirational also, yet, I love being able to say, "Wow, that really did happen."
This book is SO encouraging for me, a believer in the most-high God, the Father, and His Son Jesus. I know there is no other way that Joan of Arc could have performed and accomplished those historical feats. And that was only 550+ years ago- much sooner ago than Biblical history. Her attitude and behavior are absolutely beautifully inspired by God as a human can be. I appreciate her humanity, which reminds me that I could be so inspired as God leads. I appreciate her humility and meekness, as I aspire to be also.
I love the contrast of the pride in volume one of the character Paladin.
I'm still reading this book a little each night at my bedboard. To me, her story is an outward manifestation of an inward truth of the spiritual battles we fight every day of our own adversity and the temptations to be less than loving and honourable.
And most especially is the encouragement of the times we are living in of the current world empire. Even though I may not like the choices of attitudes and behavior of others, I realize that God has a purpose and plan for each person, city, and country on the planet. I can learn to remain calm and peaceful in spite of the turmoil, knowing that God truly is in control and can guide people's choices very well without forcing anyone to do anything. This was so well depicted in the chapter when the deer was scared out of the bushes into the British garrison, causing the men to cry out for joy of fresh meat, and allowing Joan's army to know their hidden location. Simple things like that, as God knows how people will respond and allows others to act out their desires to get the desired results. Kind of like directing the flow of a river, not by actually controlling the water directly, but allowing dams to be built by others, forcing the water in another direction naturally. -Just like the verse Proverbs 211 "The king's heart in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water He turns it whithersoever He will."
I just finished reading about Joan finishing her battles, crowning the king of France. I know I will continue to be inspired by her courage of knowing that she would have a dreadful end, yet be miraculously strengthened by God to endure it. That gives me so much hope when I fear what more may happen to us in this life before the nearing end. A most timely encouragement for all!
